THE GABY CLUB

Victoria Cross RecipientThe Gaby Club is the 11/28th 'boozer'. It is a place where we can go socialise and have a laugh. You're pretty much always guaranteed a good time when you're at the Gabby club and cheap drinks and food just sweetens the deal.

The Gaby Club was named after Lieutenant (Lt) Alfred Edward Gaby VC, 28th Battalion AIF.

Lt Gaby was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for 'most conspicuous bravery and dash in attack' on 8 August 1918 at Villers Bretonneux.

During an attack, Lt Gaby rushed through a hole in the wire which was holding up the rest of the battalion and single handedly captured fifty enemy soldiers and four machine guns.

He then reorganised his men and continued the attack.

He was killed three days later by a sniper when walking along the line encouraging his men during another attack.

The Victoria Cross is Britain's and Australia's highest award for gallantry.
