8 Combat Service Support Battalion offers a large number of part-time careers in roles that are very diverse and offer you a lot of variety. 8 CSSB can offer jobs to people with past experience and current skills as well as something new for those who are looking for something different. All training and equipment is provided, and the training you receive civilian accredited. All this and the pay is tax-free.

What types of jobs are available?
Generally the types of jobs available are split between what are called General Entry (where you are first trained basic soldiering skills before commencing specialist skills or trades training) or Direct Entry jobs (where pre-acquired civilian skills and qualifications are recognised and you work in that skill in the Army unit - eg Doctors, Nurses, psychologists etc). To enlist you must meet certain conditions of service requirements and be physically fit. Read below to find out more about how you can join the team at 8 CSSB!.
General Entry:
No matter which job you are interested in, the basic recruit training is the same and all soldiering skills are reinforced and practiced continually. During recruit course, recruits acquire the basic knowledge, skills and physical fitness over a period of 45 days at Kapooka. After basic training, recruits undertake specialist training (IET - Initial Employment Training) to learn their specialised job.
Clerk Administration: includes responsibility for the essential administration of the Unit, handling correspondence, data base management, written communications and pay. Transport Driver: involves the driving and maintenance of all Unit vehicles. Logistics Operator: includes issuing and receipt of all Unit stores and equipment including weapons, ammunition, dangerous goods, food, petroleum and oils to name a few. Operator Supply: provide supplies required to equip and maintain units during training and combat operations and can include providing clerical support, or being responsible for the packaging and storing of dangerous goods. Army Chef: involves the ordering and receipt of all food stores, the management of Army rations and the planning and control of catering functions - and of course cooking! Medical Assistant: responsibilities include the well being and health of soldiers, prevent disease in the field and assisting doctors and nurses in the care and treatment of patients. Psychological Examiner: assist Army Psychologists in providing advice, and gain skills as a technical assistant in the field of psychological assessment. Fitter Armament and Metalsmiths are involved in the maintenance of weapons, material-handling equipment, general engineering equipment and watercraft and sheet metal welding. Electrical Technicians, Electrical Systems Technicians: technicians who can repair small and large electrical engines, refrigerators, air-conditioners, telecommunication systems and radios. Recovery Mechanic, Vehicle Mechanic: recover damaged military vehicles and equipment and conduct immediate and vehicle repairs to get them going again. This is just a short list and brief description of the jobs on offer. There are far more such as petroleum operators, electrical specialists, preventative medicine assistants, dental assistants, ammunition technicians etc. Opportunities to specialise are abundant.

8 CSSB also has positions for professionals (with a Degree or equivalent qualification) such as:
If you are interested in practicing in your field in the Army Reserve, you can join the Australian defence Force as a Direct Entry Officer. Members who join the Army Reserve as DEO's undertake an abridged 2-week recruit-course before they commence parading at the unit.
Conditions of Service
To join the Army Reserve you need to meet certain educational, medical, and fitness requirements.

Pay
All Army Reserve pay is tax-free and wont affect your Austudy allowances. On top of this, there are many allowances such as for meals and for living in the field when on exercises, to compensate for any hardships of Infantry training.
