History

History of the 8th COMBAT SERVICES SUPPORT BATTALION

The 8th Combat Service Support Battalion - 8 CSSB (formally 8th Brigade Administrative Support Battalion - 8 BASB) was formed on the 1st of July 1995 through the amalgamation of the 16th Transport Squadron (RACT), 8th Field Supply Company (RAAOC), 1st Field Ambulance RAAMC, 111th Filed Workshop (RAEME) and 6th Field Dental Unit.

On formation, the Battalion was established as a Battalion Headquarters, Operations Section, Transport Company, Supply Company, Medical Company, Workshop Company, Dental Company and an Administration Company. The Operations cell was formed by the amalgamation of the operations elements of the former Units and the Administration Company by the elements of the former Unit headquarters and the administrative elements. The Unit was named the 8th Brigade Administrative Battalion.

In April 2000, the Medical and Dental Companies were amalgamated to form Health Services Company and the Administrative Company renamed Operational Support Company. In September 2000, 8 BASB was the first Reserve BASB to be allocated a Psychological Support Team and this then cemented the Health Services Company concept by the availability of all health services within the Australian Army as a level two health facility to the 8th Brigade.

In mid 2001 the Unit was renamed the 8th Combat Service Support Battalion as it better described our role within the Brigade - supporting the Brigade's Combat and Combat Support Units.
