General info about AAA Alpine Skills Trips

For those uninitiated to the alpine environment, the Australian High Country offers an ideal environment to introduce members to the finer points of misery and suffering in a (relatively) harsh environment. The AAA runs several trips to the Snowy Mountains each year, both formal exercises and informal activities. The AAA also provides assistance to UATL's wishing to run alpine adventurous training activities for their unit, within Australia. This style of trip is an ideal low cost, low admin experience where participants previously unaccustomed to the technicalities of snow survival and snow travel can engage in an activity which places them well outside their comfort zone without mind numbing objective hazards and third world isolation.

Basic Alpine Skills - Technical Climbing

The snowy mountains also offer limited scope for technical climbing training, predominantely conducted at Blue Lake in Kosciuszko National Park. In a good winter season, several vertical water ice formations can be found on the rocks surrounding the lake. These are sufficient to give activity participants a good appreciation of steep ice climbing.
