Introduction
Adventurous training is a training methodology that:
- is based on experiential learning theory
- involves an adventure experience as the basis for learning
- is used to develop the individual and group qualities required for operations
- is used throughout the ADF
Adventurous training is conducted by:
- ADF units
- adventure associations such as the Army Alpine Association and the Army White Water Association
Types of Adventurous Training
Any activity that is inherently adventurous can form the basis for adventurous training.
Activities that are commonly used for adventurous training in the ADF are:
- mountaineering
- nordic skiing
- rock climbing
- abseiling
- canyoning
- caving
- white water kayaking
- white water rafting
- sea kayaking
Adventurous Training and the AAA
Army Alpine Association is an authorised adventurous training association which means that the President can authorise the conduct of an adventurous training activity.
All AAA authorised adventurous training activities are a form of ADF training and are conducted in accordance with Defence policies and requirements.
How to Organise Adventurous Training
Anyone can organise an adventurous training activity.
However, for the activity to be an authorised activity, it must be approved by:
- the unit commander (ie CO) for unit adventurous training
- the President for association adventurous training
The benefits of conducting an authorised activity may include:
- duty status for participants
- access to Defence resources such as rations, accommodation, transport and equipment
- access to funding
- other support from Defence
Other AT Organisations and Useful Links
Adventurous Training Wing of Army Recruit Training Centre at Blamey Barracks, Kapooka trains and qualifies ADF members as Unit Adventurous Training Leaders (UATLs).
UATLs conduct adventurous training for their units and support other units in the conduct of adventurous training.
UATLs can conduct adventurous training for adventure associations.
Army White Water Association is an authorised adventure association that conducts adventurous training activities that are primarily paddle-based such as:
- white water kayaking
- white water rafting
- sea kayaking
