The Army Museum of North Queensland is located within Jezzine Barracks, Kissing Point in Townsville. The Museum displays the proud Army history of the North Queensland region. In addition to the exhibition function, the Museum is also actively involved in the education of military personnel and the general public. The Museum collects and exhibits memorabilia associated with past and current military units and personnel from North Queensland, including a geographic area between Rockhampton in the south, extending north to Torres Strait and west to the Northern Territory border. The Collection extends from the establishment of the first defences at Townsville and Thursday Island until the present day. Any military activity, from any geographic location within the world, both peaceful and warlike, can form the subject of the Museum's Collection. There must be, however, a link to the Australian Army in North Queensland.
Initially housed in the old Kissing Point Fort, the new Museum has moved to the newly refurbished building at the centre of Jezzine barracks. The Museum was officially opened to the public on 23rd June 2011 by Major General John Caligari. Showcased within the Museum is a gallery displaying pre-federation Army and a gallery showing more recent conflicts of Vietnam and Korea, and the history of Sir John Lavararck and Lavarack Barracks. A third gallery is planned for 2012 and will house World War I and World War II displays, including the Townsville Honour Boards from both these conflicts.
The Museum is currently open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9 am to 1 pm. Entry is via the Mitchell Street gates and parking is available opposite the entrance gate and along the front of the Museum.
