ADF aced in ANZAC Day Challenge
The ADF All-Stars Australian Rules team suffered its first loss in the history of the Anzac Day Challenge, after the Australian Combined Emergency Services (ACES) team halted the ADF's unbeaten run.
The ADF team had won the previous five encounters, however the ACES side was this year meticulously hand-picked to notch up its first victory against the ADF.
The match was played on Anzac Day at Adelaide Oval as a curtain-raiser to the South Australian National Football League's (SANFL) grand final replay between Central Districts and Glenelg and provided a memorable opportunity for the players to be part of a big Anzac Day occasion.
Adelaide football hero and Vietnam veteran Graham Cornes gave a pre-match pep talk to the ADF players that emphasised their actions on the field would be likened to those in battle, however driving rain throughout the match hampered the true spectacle of the action.
The ACES were able to break through for the first two goals after early pressure on the ADF backline. The ADF soon made its first charge on the back of three penalties, but was not rewarded on the famous Adelaide Oval scoreboard.
The ACES then added further two goals in quick succession and another right on quarter-time to take a very handy 43-point lead, while keeping the ADF scoreless.
The ADF responded in the second term with the first two goals and made its intentions clear of getting back into the game by getting to the ball first in the slippery conditions.
The ACES however, also responded with two goals against the run of play, with the conditions making it near impossible to tackle the ball carrier.
At half-time, Navy's Able Seaman Leon Noel came in for some running repairs to a head wound, while the ADF side regathered its composure for the second half.
While the rain eased slightly, so to did the flow of scoring opportunities, with both teams working hard to find easy possessions.
In a lack-lustre third quarter, the ACES added just two goals to take a seemingly unassailable lead in the final term.
ADF forward Able Seaman Patrick Wilson made one of the goals of the game when he held a strong mark in the third minute of the final quarter, but that was the end of the ADF's scoring.
With players still going very hard for the ball, a bad head clash with less than 10 minutes to go saw an ACES and ADF player take away some physical mementos of a hard-fought game.
The Australian Services Australian Football Association will now gear itself to match the ACES' effort at next year's Anzac Day Challenge. Interested players should take note of update to the ASAFA website on the Defence Intranet for further information.
The ADF All-Stars would to thank their sponsors: ISS Facility Services, GHD, Australian Defence Credit Union, Bayer Environmental Science, Toll Transitions and Thales Australia for their support. Special thanks are also due to the six ASAFA umpires, who helped officiate at the game.

ADF Female All Stars Play on the MCG - 9 Aug 2008
The ADF's finest female Australian Rules footballers grabbed a unique opportunity of playing on the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground, when they took on a Victorian development team in a curtain-raiser to the AFL match between St Kilda and Collingwood on Saturday, 9 August.
In trying conditions, the ADF squad of 21 pushed the more fancied Victorian development side of 30 players, to go down by 20 points - 8-9 (57) to 4-13 (37).
In what was its pinnacle of representation, the Australian Services women's team had to overcome initial nerves and a strong start by the Victorian team before the ADF found great momentum in the second half, when the teams were more evenly matched.
In his first match as ADF women's coach, WO2 John Saunders said the Victorian team dominated early by kicking five goals in the opening quarter, but to the credit of his players, the ADF was able to claw the deficit back to a respectable 20 points at half-time.
With a strong crowd building for the AFL fixture, the ADF team stepped up and was unfortunate not to convert many scoring opportunities that could have resulted in a memorable victory.
The ADF team had eight scoring shots in the final quarter, but was only able to convert one into a goal, with scoring shots for both sides being even at the full-time siren. "If we had have kicked straight, we could definitely have won the match" said coach WO2 Saunders. However, he praised the concept and hopes it can become a regular fixture on the ADF Australian Rules calendar.
ADF vice-captain Sergeant Katie Staines (Russell Offices) said the experience was memorable for all involved despite coming up against a well-drilled Victorian team. "The Victorian team had been training for months and they were awesome to watch, whereas we had three days in camp" SGT Staines said. "We had about eight debutantes in the team and all the girls gained a lot from the experience. Even the Victorian players commented on how good our standard was, which was pleasing. It would be great if this can happen annually".
Leading Seaman Candice Freeman (HMAS Cerberus) was rewarded for her efforts with the best-on-ground award for the ADF team, while Leading Seaman Trish Muller (HMAS Watson) was named players' player.
Honourable mentions also went to Sergeant Amy Hall (8 CSSB) who was kept busy at centre-halfback, while Leading Aircraftwoman Sharon Purdon (Russell) was tested out in almost every position on the field before fracturing her collarbone in the last quarter.
Forwards, Flight Lieutenant Trinette Bagnell (RAAF Glenbrook) and Flying Officer Debbie Herberz (RAAF Williams) were also unfortunate not to score on numerous occasions in the drizzly and slippery conditions.

Womens AFL Win NSW Police Games
What a Team
A combined services ADF women's team from Sydney and Canberra played a well recruited NSW Police Services team in the annual NSW Police Games at Picken Oval Croydon Park on Saturday 24 Feb 07. The first quater was an out and out arm wrestle with both teams feeling each other out despite the fact the Police team kicked the first goal with 60 seconds of the game commencing. At the first break the scores where level at one goal two each.
The second stanza saw scoring opportunities reduced but accuracy had increased. Only three goals were kicked in the second quarter, two to the police side and one to the ADF. The ADF had more of the ball and inside their 50 more often but could not make the best of their opportunities. The girls in blue lead by six points at half time.
After the main break the police stepped up a notch as the ADF let in two cheap goals and failed to register a score for themselves. With the job ahead of them and a few changes to the onfield line up and three goals in arrears, the ADF then showed they had come to play by having a six goal one behind quarter lead by surprise package SMN Hailey Merrick. The police failed to build on their three quarter time score and never entered their attacking 50 in the last period.
Final Score: ADF 8 - 3 (51) def NSW Police 5 - 2 (32).
Best for ADF:
SMN Hailey Merrick (Navy),
CPL Rebekah Allen (RAAF),
AB Candice Freeman (Navy),
CPL Amy Hall (Army),

Service newspaper Article:
CPL Emmal Hender's Report
Well what an experience, not only playing for Australia but getting to know a great bunch of talented girls and showing the Irish that Aussies never give up!
The tour kicked off when we arrived in (a cold rainy) Dublin on the 15 Oct 2006. The first week involved 25 girls, including myself and representatives from QLD (2), NSW (1), VIC (15), WA (6) getting to know each other, training 2-3 hours per day and acclimatising to the weather.
The coaching staff ran quality training sessions which including skills ends and full field drills. Most of the drills focussed on improving our skills with the round ball and there were some long and intense workouts.
On 25 Oct we had our first scratch match against Rounding Towers, a local Dublin team. We won that match by 50 points, a good result especially considering it was the first game the Aussie girls had played together as a team. The major benefit of that game was that it gave us the opportunity to assess our strengths and weaknesses in preparation for the upcoming matches. In addition, the opposition's coach kindly offered us some pointers which we took on board and worked on during the following training session. And so we went into the first game of the series with confidence that we could give the Irish a run for their money.
The score board however showed a different story - with Australia being beaten by 115 points. It was a hard game and although we made many mistakes, (kicking long and not hand passing the ball enough etc) the girls staunchly fought to the end.
We learnt some good lessons from that first game. Firstly we learnt that, for a non-contact game, there was a lot of Irish-style tackling involved and the Irish were good at it! Secondly we learnt that if we wanted to be competitive we would have to get more involved with the game. And as a result the next couple of training sessions focussed more on tackling and going harder at the ball.
The second match was held at Parnell Park on 4 November 2006 in front of a crowd of about 500 people. I think it's fair to say that the revised training approach and our ever-increasing knowledge of the game really showed in the second match (we narrowed the gap significantly and finishing only 18 points down). It was a good note to finish on and the girls held their heads high as they walk off the field.
There were other highlights of the trip too, we got to watch the boys play their games (and win the final!). We got to meet the Australian Ambassador (a lovely lady) and of course we got to see a little bit of Ireland and meet lots of Irish people.
Hopefully next year we will show the Irish what we can do on our own turf.
