Directorate of Reserves - Army

Welcome

The Role of the Army Reserve is 'to deliver specified capability to support and sustain ADF preparedness and operations'. It does so by the direct provision of individuals and groups to ADF tasks and operations but also, through its unique position within society, by helping ensure community engagement with, and support for, the ADF.

Between 2007 and 2011, 6500 Army Reservists served on both domestic and overseas operations. Reservists have served in Iraq and continue to serve in Afghanistan. They currently provide the majority of Army's contribution to East Timor and the Solomon Islands, provided security for events such as APEC, the Commonwealth Games, and the Pope's visit, and played a vital role in disaster relief operations such as the Victorian fires of 2010 and the 2011 Queensland floods.

This contribution reflects the four core tasks of the Army Reserve:

  • Delivering specified warfighting capabilities (with a strong focus on regional stability operations)
  • Providing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and domestic security as part of Whole of Government approach
  • Maintaining and providing specialist individual capabilities
  • Contributing to Army surge capabilities
