Anniversary of Montevideo Maru sinking

This event was organised by the Rabaul & Montevideo Maru Society, held Saturday 30 June. More than 550 relatives and friends of those soldiers and civilian internees who died in the aftermath of the Japanese invasion of the New Guinea Islands, and the 1,053 who perished when the prison ship Montevideo Maru was sunk by an American submarine off the Philippines on July 1, 1942.

On Friday, 27 April 2012, the first Regimental Sergeant Major of the Army, Warrant Officer Class One Wally Thompson, OAM was farewelled during a funeral service at the Garrison Church in the Rocks, Sydney. During the service, the current Regimental Sergeant Major of the Army, Warrant Officer Dave Ashely delivered a eulogy.
