The Royal Australian Regiment

RAR Badge

The Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) is the full time component of the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. The RAR was formed on 23rd November 1948 with the raising of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions from the 65th, 66th and 67th Battalions of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Japan.

The RAR currently comprises seven battalions having peaked at nine battalions during Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

8/9 RAR

The Part Time component of the Royal Australian Infantry Corps is comprised primarily of the six state regiments, many of which trace their origins to the early 20th Century. These are:

Regional Force Surveillance Units

Regional Force Surveillance Units are integrated full-time and part-time units which draw on local and indigenous peoples to provide regional surveillance on Australia's northern coastline. The Regional Force Surveillance Units and locations are:
