RMC-A Association Inc

Overview

ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE OF AUSTRALIA
ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED

Background

&nbsp
1. In 1998, it was proposed to amalgamate the RMC History Fund and the Duntroon House Restoration Fund to be managed by one committee - The RMC Heritage Committee. After legal opinions were sought, the Commandant (in 2000) determined that they should remain separated because the funds served separate purposes and they were subject to independent trust deeds.

2. In late 2007, the Commandant, issued Terms of Reference to commence a review of the Society and its future. He indicated that the 2011 Centenary of Duntroon was an opportunity to revitalise the Society and amalgamate the History and Restoration Fund into an incorporated entity which would govern activities with an experienced and qualified Board of Management. The review was completed in 2008 and the Royal Military College of Australia Association Incorporated was created.

3. In relation to the new Association, the Commandant stated in the Duntroon Society's October 2008 Newsletter "[…] cognisant of the many other funds, trusts and organisations who were a part of the review, it has been a complex undertaking to design an arrangement which met the needs of various stakeholders yet preserved the history and aims of the legacy organisations[…]".

4. The new Royal Military College of Australia Association Incorporated was created on 7 July 2008. The first Board meeting of the Association was held on 15 October 2008 to make final amendments to the draft Constitution and to confirm the 'winding up' of various funds. The Duntroon Society was preserved in the structure of the Association as a separate Committee with all existing members of the Society recognised as foundation members.

5. The long term vision of the Association is to create a self funding entity focussed on the cadets, staff, graduates and heritage of Duntroon. It is intended to have a professional Visitors Centre incorporating a museum and research facility offering guided tours and memorabilia sales. The Visitors Centre and heritage aspects of the College will be managed in the future by the Association whose membership will include all staff and graduates of Army's officer training establishments.

RMC-A Association Inc. Stock - Staff Cadet Statue

In early December 2008 the Royal Military College of Australia accepted delivery of their first shipment of polyresin cold cast bronze figurines based on a contemporary Staff Cadet of the Royal Military College of Australia, ready for a graduation parade at Duntroon, Canberra. The company called "Naked Army" produced the model over an eight month period to a 1:6 scale likeness of a Staff Cadet dressed in summer ceremonial dress. This form of ceremonial dress was used at the College from December 1959.

Although no particular staff cadet was chosen as the model for the cast, it is clear that "Naked Army" based it on a 6 foot staff cadet from one of the many images sent to them in order to capture the sense of ceremony and occasion in a three dimensional model. It is anticipated that the figurine will be a popular choice by friends and families of graduates of the College as a fitting congratulatory presentation, and equally it will have appeal to the historical and reunion groups. As the model weighs 2.1 kilograms it would be wise to consider purchase and collection on a visit to the College.

Unlike mass-produced collectables, these finely sculpted collector pieces are cast and finished one at a time, and bear an individual serial number. The Staff Cadet in full uniform with a scabbard sword modelled on the King George VI pattern Infantry sword is represented in fine detail. In the compilation of specially selected images and captions contained on the presentation box, the Royal Military College endeavours to capture a theme of history through to contemporary times which Staff Cadets of all eras bond to and identify with. The figurine is part of a suite of activities and projects which will be produced for the centenary of the College in 2011. "Staff Cadet 001" is placed in the College Museum at Duntroon.

Please note: the base of the figurine is unsuitable for direct engraving, however most quality engraving outlets are skilled in preparation of presentation medallions or plates.

The Staff Cadet figurine is available exclusively from the Royal Military College at a retail cost of $170. The point of contact for more information or orders is the Army Shop Duntroon
