An AIO is a soldier who acquires, processes and analyses intelligence of tactical, operational and/or strategic importance and disseminates it in a timely manner and appropriate format with little or no supervision. As the AIO receives additional training and gains experience and promotion they will be responsible for planning, coordinating and managing complex and highly sensitive intelligence-related activities.
An AIO must have a high level of written and oral communications skills, be able to think logically and objectively, be capable of analysing complex and unprecedented situations and exercising above average judgment on the relevance, time-sensitivity and accuracy of information, display above average initiative, be capable of assuming responsibility well beyond their worn rank and have the highest standards of honesty and integrity.
Educational Requirement
An AIO must have a minimum education standard of Year 10 or equivalent with a pass in English or English expression.
Employment Training
All intelligence training is conducted at DIntTC.
The IET comprises the following suite of courses:
- Defence Intelligence Research Analysis Course:
2 Weeks The aim of the DIRAC is to train Defence Personnel in research skills and analytical techniques. The training is designed for personnel assigned to analytical positions. The emphasis throughout the course is on learning and the development of the individual, with the focus on the application of the theory and skills in a practical environment. On successful completion of this course soldiers will attend the Introduction to Defence Intelligence Course.
- Introduction to Defence Intelligence Course:
3 Weeks This course provides initial core training in intelligence focussing on the application of theory and skills in a practical environment. It also provides an appreciation of the role of military intelligence in the wider intelligence community. On successful completion of this course soldiers will attend the Land Intelligence Initial Employment Training Course.
- Land Intelligence Initial Employment Training Course:
10 Weeks This course provides both basic and advanced training in intelligence and security skills in a modularised format. Instruction includes lectures, briefings and practical exercises. There will be private study or exercises programmed for some weekday evenings and to a lesser extent on weekends. Assessment will be in the form of written tests, report writing, participation in exercises and oral briefings. Soldiers will also be assessed in the general area of skills, knowledge and attitude throughout the course. On successful completion of this course and being found suitable for employment in Aust Int Corps by the Senior Instructor, Land Intelligence Wing and the CO DIntTC, soldiers will be reclassified as an AIO and will be corps-transferred to Aust Int Corps. Successful completion of the Land Intelligence Initial Employment Training suite of courses also satisfies one of the requirements for promotion to corporal within Aust Int Corps.

Employment Location
Aust Int Corps personnel are employed in various locations throughout Australia. AIOs may be employed in a specialist intelligence unit such as the 1st Intelligence Battalion, which has elements in most capital cities and several other regional locations. They may serve on a headquarters at brigade, division or at the strategic level or fulfill the vital intelligence support role at the battle group tactical level. The work environment in which personnel may serve is diverse, ranging from an office environment to working in the field in tents, vehicles or patrolling with an infantry unit. In addition, the AIO is in great demand for overseas operational deployments.
Further Training
AIOs are required to complete further courses for trade and promotion throughout their career.
Pay
The pay levels for this employment are:
- CPL GORPS Pay Group 4;
- SGT GORPS Pay Group 5;
- WO2 GORPS Pay Group 6.
Civil Accreditation
This category's courses meet the requirements for both civilian and military authorities and will make you eligible for:
- Certificate III in Government (Security) on successful completion of the Introduction to Defence Intelligence Course, Defence Intelligence and Research Analysis Course, Land Intelligence Initial Employment Training Course, Subject One for Corporal Course and demonstration of competency in the workplace
- Diploma of Government (Security) on successful completion of the Combat Intelligence Supervisor Course, Protective Security Supervisor Course, Subject One for Sergeant Course, promotion to sergeant and demonstration of competency in the workplace.
- Advanced Diploma in Intelligence and Security Analysis on successful completion of the Manager Intelligence Operations Course, promotion to warrant officer and demonstration of competency in the workplace (this accreditation is awaiting Department of Education, Science and Training approval).
