A Driver Specialist (DVR SPEC) is an Australian Regular Army (ARA) or Army Reserve (ARes), Royal Australian Corps of Transport (RACT) soldier, who operates, supervises and manages Army B vehicles in combat, combat support and combat service support roles, by day and by night, on all forms of roads and off roads as required, carrying a variety of loads including cargo, personnel and dangerous goods (DG).

Specialist Requirements

To become a Driver Specialist a soldier needs to be CP3.

The equivalent civilian licences and experience maybe granted RPL/RCC for non-RACT personnel.

  • Driver Specialist Grade 2 - PTE (ARA/ARes) Pay Group 2

Training
The Driver Specialist course is held at Army Logistic Training Centre, Road Transport Wing, Puckapunyal, Victoria 45 Working Days.
The Driver Specialist (ECN 274-1/2/3/7) operates medium rigid and heavy rigid vehicles which may include operating a variety of specialist B vehicles such as fuel and water tankers.
The Operator Heavy Vehicles (OP HVY VEH) (ECN 274-4/8) operates medium and
heavy rigid vehicles that tow a trailer which exceeds 9 tonne GVM and have a Gross Combination Mass (GCM) of up to 42.5 tonne.
An Operator Specialist Vehicle (OP SPEC VEH) (ECN 274-5/6/9) operates and
manages heavy articulated Army B vehicles, there is a return of service obligation (ROSO) training time plus one year applies on completion of the Operator Specialist Vehicle course. Additional licence codes can include:

  • Road Train course
  • Bulk Liquid Fuel Tanker course or
  • Heavy Tank/Plant Transporter course.
  • Maybe required to operate: Material Handling Equipment (MHE);
  • Armoured vehicles APC/ASLAV/MBT (first and reverse only);
  • Various engineer plant equipment (first and reverse only).

A Transport Operations Supervisor (TPT OPS SPV) (ECN 274-10) who manages and supervises the tasking of road transport assets in combat, combat support and combat service support roles and may also conducts driver training, assessment and licensing.
A Transport Operations Manager (TPT OPS MAN) (ECN 274-11/12A) who manages the tasking of road transport assets in combat, combat support and combat service support roles and may also conduct driver training, assessment and licensing.

The Driver Specialist courses meet the requirements for both civilian and military accreditation and will make you eligible for:

  • Certificate III in Transport and Logistic (Road Transport) is granted to personnel on being assessed competent as a PTE.
  • Certificate IV in Transport and Logistic (Road Transport) is granted to personnel on being assessed competent as a CPL.


Civil Qualifications

The military vehicle qualifications obtained during the formal courses conducted by ALTC are fully recognised by the state and territory road transport authorities.
