Description

The Officers' Quarters, known as the Mess, is one of three surviving buildings from the initial barracks construction. During the period of the Police presence from 1870 until 1885, alterations were made in 1874 by the addition of two bedroom and verandah returns.
In 1885 a further addition was made with two bedrooms at the back, extensions to the front and two stores behind the kitchen. In 1913 an additional two-storey building was built with lecture rooms, officers rooms and a new kitchen and toilets. The original kitchen was demolished.
The Tennis Court adjoining the Mess is thought to date from the 1890's and as such is the oldest lawn tennis court in Brisbane.
The Mess became the Officers' and Sergeants' Mess in 1999.
