Major General Steve Smith, AM, CSC, RFD, was born on 3 July 1959 in Hobart, Tasmania. Enlisting in the Australian Army Reserve as a soldier in 1976, he was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1979.
His regimental service includes the 40th Independent Rifle Company, The Royal Tasmania Regiment, the 4th Battalion, The Royal New South Wales Regiment and the 12th/40th Battalion, The Royal Tasmania Regiment. Between 1986 and 1990 he held the additional appointment of Honorary Aide de Camp to His Excellency the Governor of Tasmania. Between 1997 and 2000 he commanded the 12th/40th Battalion, The Royal Tasmania Regiment for which he was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross.
Major General Smith's training postings include Senior Instructor Officer Cadet Training Unit and Chief Instructor Military Operations within the 6th Training Group. Between 2001 and 2002 he was posted to the instructional staff of the Australian Command and Staff College.
On promotion to Colonel in 2003 he was posted as the Commandant of the Regional Training Centre Tasmania. In 2005 he was posted as the Director of the Army Personnel Agency Hobart.
In 2006 Major General Smith was promoted to Brigadier and posted as the Assistant Commander 1st Division. He subsequently deployed to Iraq, serving as the Commanding General of the Joint Headquarters Transition Team within the US led Multinational Security Transition Command - Iraq. For his service in this appointment he was awarded the US Legion of Merit (Officer). On return to Australia he resumed his posting at Headquarters 1st Division.
His next posting was as Commander 9th Brigade between 2008 and 2010. In 2010 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for exceptional service as the Commander Joint Headquarters Transition Team Iraq, Assistant Commander 1st Division and Commander 9th Brigade.
Following a posting to the Active and Standby Staff Group in 2011, Major General Smith was promoted to his current rank and assumed command of the 2nd Division in January 2012.
Major General Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tasmania and is a graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College (Reserve). He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management from the Australian Emergency Management Institute.
In his civilian career, Major General Smith works for the Tasmanian Government where he coordinates strategic level emergency management issues. He is also Deputy Chairman of the Board of St John Ambulance Tasmania. Major General Smith is married to Kate and they have one daughter, Olivia. He enjoys military history, travelling and photography.
