Once posted to Kapooka, you will soon learn that the city of Wagga Wagga has all the services of a large city in a relaxed country atmosphere.
To make your relocation a little smoother, below is some information on defence housing, schools, health services, jobs and even contact numbers for connecting your utilities.
Visit our Base Guide for more information on what Kapooka has to offer, or view the Wagga Guide to see events and facilities that are available in the city.
Wagga Wagga has 21 suburbs which all offer something different, depending on what type of lifestyle you are looking for.
The newer suburbs of Glenfield, Bourkelands, Lloyd and Tatton house the majority of off-base service residences. It is important to note that Kapooka has a retention date (where they don't release their staff until after the new staff arrive) and hence members often spend some weeks in temporary accommodation while waiting for existing personnel to vacate. For more information on this issue you are encouraged to contact the Wagga HMC.
Due to the amount of space available in Wagga there is a predominance of one story, freestanding dwellings with front and back yards. Defence Housing Australia (DHA) manages approximately 500 properties in the area, and many of the older houses have been replaced by newer dwellings. At first glance Wagga seems quite spread out but the outlying suburbs of Lloyd, Bourkelands and Tatton are only a five to ten minute drive from the centre of town.
The map below shows where the majority of DHA houses are located in Wagga Wagga:

Wagga Wagga is the State's largest regional education hub offering

If you are looking for a pre-school or primary school (Kinder - 6) that is close to the army base, then Kapooka Public School is very popular with defence families.
