Most visitors are surprised to learn that Wagga Wagga is one of Australia's leading regional cities with a population of over 60,000. It is also conveniently located in the centre of Australia's population triangle (Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide - and only 2 1/2 hours to canberra).

Located on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, the city has all the services of a large city. Wagga Wagga has a domestic airport (Regional Express and Qantas Airlines), Charles Sturt University, the Royal Australian Air Force Base and the Kapooka Army Recruit Training Centre.

Wagga is located in the heart of the Riverina and encompasses the area north of the Murray River and includes towns such as Griffith, Narranderra and Ardlethen. This area specialises in agriculture and livestock and is particularly known for its wine production.

There are many things to do in and around Wagga from tasting premium local wines to visiting the National Art Glass Gallery. There are local country markets to visit every Sunday or you can take a short drive to some of Australia's most historic townships like Junee, Lockhart or Griffith. Alternatively you could try your hand at rock climbing or hit the town at one of the many local pubs and clubs.

Wagga is also fast becoming known for its cultural events, hosting the National Golden Gown Fashion Award, the Festival of the Voice and the National Veterans Games. For those looking further afield Wagga is positioned almost midway between Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney is about a five hour drive, Melbourne is about four hours away and Canberra is a close two and a half hour drive.

Wagga has four distinct seasons, with cool winter nights and summer days reaching 40 degrees . All DHA homes have heating and cooling supplied but due to the wide variance of climate, you will need warm clothes and bedding in winter as well as light clothes in summer.

By Car - Wagga Wagga is situated at the intersection of the Sturt and Olympic Highways. If travelling from Sydney or Canberra, turn off the Hume Highway approximately 35km south of the township of Gundagai. If travelling from Melbourne, pass through Albury on the Hume Highway then turn off onto the Olympic Highway approximately 20km north of Albury.
