The 1st Brigade

The 1st Brigade, commanded by Brigadier Gus McLachlan, is the Australian Army's light armoured brigade consisting of around 4000 civilian and military personnel. The brigade is based at Robertson Barracks, Palmerston, 20kms south of Darwin in the Northern Territory.

The 1st Brigade is the home of the Army's combat power, equipped with the M1A1 Abrams Tank, Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) and the M113AS4 Armoured Fighting Vehicle. It operates the Army's only heavy artillery, the M198 155mm Howitzer. Our soldiers and their families are at the forefront of Australia's operational commitments around the world. During 2010/11 around 1600 1st Brigade soldiers deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor.
