Victorian Education System

Education in Victoria is compulsory for all students between the ages of six and fifteen years. Most children though start their schooling just prior to or just after they turn five years of age. For children to start school they must turn five by 30th April.

Students are generally entitled to enroll at their local government school, or any other school of their choice.

Primary schooling covers a period of seven years (Prep to Year 6) and secondary schooling extends over six years (from Year 7 to Year 12).

Schools commonly arrange for students to be placed in classes onan age basis but many primary schools have mixed age classes.

Each school determines its own programs within state wide guidelines.
