Simon enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in April of 1983. During recruit training, he discovered the existence of the Army Band and sought information as to the audition requirements. Successful completion of this as a percussionist followed and he was accepted in to the Australian Army Band Corps, soon to be sent for Initial Employment Training at the newly formed Defence Force School of Music in Melbourne.
In June of 1985 Simon was posted to the Band of the First Military District, located in Brisbane. He has since had postings, in all ranks from Musician to Warrant Officer, to RMC Band Duntroon (Canberra), Australian Army Band Kapooka (Wagga Wagga), Australian Army Band Perth, the Band of the First Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, (Townsville) Australian Army Band Melbourne, Defence Force School of Music and the Australian Defence Force Academy Canberra. He now holds the position of Band Sergeant Major at the Band of the Royal Military College Duntroon.

He has been involved in countless performances with excellent musicians from all three services and the civilian world alike.
