Australian Army Psychology Corps



The Australian Army Psychology Corps contributes to enhancing and maintaining the personnel component of ADF operational and support capabilities by delivering effective and appropriate specialist psychology advice and practice to strengthen the ADF, both on operations and in non-operational environments, and at all levels of the organisation.

It achieves this through selection, training and ongoing management of ADF personnel; mental health; psychology research; and effectively managing the delivery of psychology services to the ADF.

Did you know?
The rank of colour sergeant was introduced into the British Army in 1813 as the protector of the ensign and the Colour. There is no such rank in the Australian Army except at the Royal Military College Duntroon, where it is a rank within the Corps of Staff Cadets. The escorts in a Colour Party are often staff sergeants and for ceremonial occasions, when Colours are on parade, they are referred to as the colour sergeants.

Examiner Psychological

ECN 131 

The Examiner Psychological (Examiner Psych) is a highly skilled human resources technician in the field of applied military psychology. They are fully engaged in a wide range of skilled technical tasks that become more complex with rank.

The Corps' primary roles are: psychological assessment for personnel selection, classification and placement; psychological briefing for operations; mental health maintenance and post operational screening; stress management; individual counselling; operational and personnel research; performance effectiveness and training support; and human aspects of equipment design and operation.




DutiesPay
  • Conduct professional, technical and administrative tasks within, and on behalf of, the DFPO, in support of professionally qualified psychologists.
  • Actively support the psychologist and personally participate in the mental health screening of acute and chronic trauma victims.
  • Is an integral part of Psychological Support Teams (PsSTs) providing operational support to Land Command land based forces and maintaining the mental well being of Defence personnel.
  • Manage and perform group and individual psychometric testing procedures.
  • Administer, score and record a variety of psychological tests to aid in selection, placement and diagnostic decisions.
  • Employ management and research principles and techniques to assist in the evaluation of tests and analysis of other data.
  • Assist in matters of a psychological nature involved in the selection, classification and placement of Defence personnel.
  • Raise and maintain psychological records.

On qualification as an Examiner Psych the trade is classified as a Pay Group 5 occupation.

TrainingPosting

Basic initial employment training in Examiners Psych is at the Army Logistic Training Centre, Bandiana, followed by more advanced training at each trade level.

Defence Psychology units and sections employing Examiners Psych are located in Townsville, Brisbane, Oakey, Sydney, Canberra, Kapooka, Bandiana, Melbourne, Adelaide, Puckapunyal, Perth, Hobart and Darwin. There are additional locations for part-time Examiner Psych positions within Australia.

Educational RequirementFurther Information

Completion of Year 12 education with passes in English, Mathematics and two other State Education Board approved academic subjects. A 'pass' (or Sound Achievement) is defined as a result that places a candidate in the top 70 percent of students that complete the subject.
