Aircrewman

The Aircrewman is an Australian Army Aviation (AAAvn) soldier who operates as a crew member in Army utility and medium lift helicopters.

Aircrewmen are responsible for assisting the aircraft captain to operate the helicopter in a hostile tactical environment, operating helicopter role equipment and weapon systems and the loading, security and unloading of passengers and cargo including dangerous goods.

An Aircrewman may be employed within AAAvn and ADF units in a wide variety of operational tasks or training duties:

  • Army Aviation Training Centre in Oakey;
  • 5th Aviation Regiment in Townsville;
  • 6th Aviation Regiment in Sydney;
  • Air Movements Training Development Unit in Sydney;
  • Defence Aviation Safety in Canberra;
  • Aerospace Operational Support Group in Adelaide;
  • DACI-A in Townsville and Canberra;
  • Selected training establishments around Australia; and
  • Selected DFR postings around Australia.
Prequisites & MedicalSelection Process

Prerequisites

Service within AAAvn as an Aircrewman is open to male and female personnel from any service or corps, from PTE-WO2(E).

Personnel considering a transfer must have a minimum of two years military service and have completed Junior Leader Course (JLC) prior to selection.


Medical

Minimum medical standard for service as Aircrewman is MEC201. Applicants must be AIRN compliant at time of application. Specialist aviation medical and dental is to be completed prior to attendance at phase three of selection.


Training

Successful candidates posted to AAvnTC for duration of training (up to 10 months)

Aircrewman Selection Process
Phase One

  • Complete a PE166 Application for Transfer
  • CO's recommendation
  • Member statement
  • Aircrewman Aptitude testing
  • Psych Interview

At the completion of phase one all applications are sent to SCMA.

Phase Two

Initial review of application conducted by SCMA. Candidates cleared for progression to Phase Three are to complete Specialist medical/dental requirements IAW Health Manual.

Phase Three
Aircrewman Selection Board (ASB) conducted at Army Aviation Training Centre.
ASB will select suitable candidates for training and employment within AAAvn as Aircrewmen.
