Combat Engineer

The Combat Engineer is the Royal Australian Engineer (RAE) member whose role is to assist in the conduct of a range of combat engineering tasks maintaining mobility of the Army, deny freedom of movement to enemy forces, and provide general engineering support. Combat Engineers are employed in a wide range of activities such as erecting bridges, constructing and operating rafts, assisting in the construction of temporary roads, bypasses and fords, construction of field defences, concreting, producing potable water, conducting demolitions, searching, clearing and disposing of enemy mines and explosive devices and quarrying.

  • Assist in the construction of anti-mobility obstacles.
  • Assist in the construction of field defence works.
  • Operate a water point.
  • Assist in the conduct of engineer search tasks.
  • Assist in the construction of engineer equipment bridging task.
  • Operate a variety of engineer water craft.
  • Use explosives for demolitions.
  • Operate and maintain hand and power tools.
  • Conduct expedient field construction.

This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 3 occupation.
Specialisations within Combat Engineering, (Explosives Detection Dog Handler; Operator Specialist Vehicle; and
Crewman Commander RAE) may attract a higher pay group dependant on rank and completion of specialisation training.

Training
The Combat Engineer IET Course is a 12 week course conducted at the School of Military Engineering (SME), Moorebank, Sydney, NSW.

Posting
Combat Engineers in the Regular Army are employed in Combat Engineer Regiments, Construction Squadrons and the Incident Response Regiment in Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney and Darwin.
Combat Engineers in the Reserves are employed in Combat Engineer Regiments and Combat Engineer Squadrons in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and Townsville.

Qualifications Pre-requisitesTrade Progression

Combat Engineers must have successfully completed Year 10 of a 12 Year course of schooling (or equivalent) with passes in English and Mathematics.

Combat Engineer (Cbt Engr) is the primary, single entry ECN for RAE.
