Employment Location

Aircraft Life Support Fitters are employed in a variety of Aviation units throughout Australia including Oakey, Townsville and Darwin.

Pay

On completion of the training at RAAFSTT, this particular occupation is classified as a Pay Group 3, with progression to Pay Group 4 on completion of 12 months OJT and additional aircraft life support equipment courses.

Further Training

As your career advances, you will have the opportunity to attain an Advanced Certificate in Aircraft Life Support Equipment Maintenance.

Civil Accreditation

On completion of the OJT period you will be awarded with a Certificate in Aircraft Life Support Equipment Maintenance.

Fitter Life Support Aircraft

The Aircraft Life Support Fitter is a trade specialist who is responsible for the on-going maintenance of aircraft safety and survival equipment. These tasks include the fitting of aviation life support systems including protective flying helmets, life preserver assemblies, life-rafts and aircraft escape/rescue equipment and other equipment for specific tasks. Knowledge of explosive ordnance handling and inspection requirements related to rescue pyrotechnics is required in addition to personnel rescue beacon functional testing procedures.

Duties

  • Conditioning of and craftsmanship with textile materials.

  • Fitting aviation life-support systems including protective flying helmets, life preserver assemblies, life rafts, aircraft escape/rescue equipment (Helicopter Emergency Egress Device System) and other equipment for specific tasks.

  • Knowledge of explosive ordnance handling and inspection requirements related to rescue pyrotechnics is required in addition to personal rescue beacon functional testing procedures.



Educational Requirement

Completion of Australian Year 10 education (or equivalent) with passes in English, Mathematics and Science (with a Physics content) and one other subject.

Note: Consumer Maths, General Maths, Maths in Society and similarly 'modified' Maths subjects are not suitable for entry to the Technical and Trade Scheme.

Employment Training

Aircraft Life Support Fitter Course (RAAF School of Technical Training): 24 Weeks
On-the-Job Training: 12 Months

You will complete the Aircraft Life Support Fitter Course at the RAAF School of Technical Training at Wagga Wagga NSW.

On completion of the course you will be posted to the Army Aviation Training Centre, Oakey QLD to undergo initial on the job training for a period of up to 12 months.

On completion of the OJT period you will be awarded a Certificate in Aircraft Life Support Equipment Maintenance.
