AAPRS Reporters work within the Directorate of Defence Internal Information in Public Affairs Branch at Headquarters Australian Defence Force, Canberra. Their main role is the production of the Army Newspaper; however they are also required to support the production of RAAF News and Navy News. AAPRS reporters also routinely deploy as part of Deployable Field Teams from the 1st Joint Public Affairs Unit in support of ADF operations, exercises and other activities.

AAPRS Reporters are required to write news and feature articles in journalistic style from sources including news release, interview and reader submission. They research news material and interview military and civilian personnel at all levels. They are also required to provide photographic imagery to support their work.

• Collect information and write news, feature and historical articles in support of internal and external public affairs communication objectives.
• Gather quality public affairs stills imagery to support requirements of service newspapers.
• Operate a suite newspaper publishing computer software.
• Subedit the Army newspaper.
• Operate satellite telecommunications systems in order to transmit stills and video product from remote locations.
• Maintain AIRN.

This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 5 occupation.

Applicants are assessed over a two-week period at the Army Newspaper Unit. Successful applicants will undertake OJT at the unit.

Further Training
Reporters are required to undertake normal promotion courses and other professional training as applicable.

Reporters are employed at the Directorate of Internal Information in the Public Affairs Branch of Headquarters Australian Defence Force in Canberra.

Base rank in the reporter stream is Cpl. Applicants without Subject 1 for Cpl may find themselves disadvantaged in competition for reporter positions.

• Certificate IV in Photo-Journalism is granted to personnel (Reporter) on completion of 12 months OJT and OJE as a CPL on or after 1 Jan 1995.
• Diploma of Photo-Journalism is granted to AAPRS personnel on being assessed a competent SGT on or after 1 Jan 1995.
