Operator Catering (Steward)

The Operator Catering is a soldier trained to perform food, liquor and beverage service and the preparation of light meals. They are also trained to maintain bar, dining room and kitchen equipment, in both barrack and field environments.

DutiesPay

As a PTE, the Operator Catering's main job function is to provide and maintain food and beverage services, and generic catering assistance within the kitchen. As a LCPL/CPL, the Operator Catering's main job function is as for PTE, however at junior management level, and in addition, plan and coordinate Mess functions, conduct on-the-job training, perform bar reconciliations and carry out basic non-public monies accounting procedures for a military mess, soldiers club or unit regimental trust fund.

TrainingTraining

ADF Initial Steward Course: 8 weeks

Army Initial Field Catering Course: 2 weeks


Recruit Training is followed by an eight week Initial Steward's Course at the ADF School of Catering (ADFSC), HMAS CERBERUS, Western Port Victoria. The course includes bar, dining room and reception duties. There is a further two weeks field catering training at the Field Catering Detachment Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla Victoria.

Operator Catering's (Stewards) are employed in most capital cities as well as the major military establishments in locations such as Townsville, Perth, Darwin, Sydney, and Brisbane.

Civil AccreditationFurther Information

This category's courses meet the requirements for both civilian and military authorities and will make you eligible for:

  • Certificate III in Hospitality (Multi-Skilling) is granted after successful completion of the ADF Initial Steward Course
  • The AACC training continuum beyound IET level is currently being re-scoped via CIT Solutions under the Civilian Accreditation Program. Eligibility for accreditation or qualification will be published once verified on the ADF Defence Qualification website
