Children's book for Defence families

Children's book for Defence families
The Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, launched a children’s book written and illustrated by teenage author Jessica Love, at Campbell Primary School in Canberra today.

Soon is the story of Jessica’s experience as the daughter of a deployed Australian Defence Force member. In January 2008, just before her 7th birthday, Jessica's father, Colonel Shaun Love, deployed to the Sinai Peninsula. His deployment was the inspiration for Soon.

Air Chief Marshal Binskin knows first-hand the how difficult deployment can be for Defence Families.

“Jessica's book really captures the range of emotions children and parents feel when they are separated for an extended period,” Air Chief Marshal Binksin said.

“Soon will help Defence families understand and talk about the feelings children experience while a parent is away from home.

“Soon is a great resource for families who are separated due to deployment, training or other Service requirements.

“It helps children of Defence families understand their feelings are normal and that other children are facing similar challenges during a deployment and when mum or dad returns home.

“Our children also make sacrifices to allow us to serve our nation. I want them to know we appreciate and understand what they go through and they are not alone.”

Soon was published by Echo Books with sponsorship from Defence Health. It is available from http://www.echobooks.com.au/shop/soon.

Time apart from families due to deployments, training or other Service requirements is an integral feature of Defence life.

Defence Community Organisation (DCO) provides a number of services and practical assistance to help make these experiences positive and strengthening ones.

During times of deployment, Defence family members can call the Defence Family Helpline on 1800 624 608 to sign up to receive contact and support from DCO staff.

More information about DCO is available at www.defence.gov.au/DCO/.
