ADF training in South-East Queensland in February 2018

Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel will conduct simulated counter-terrorism training activities in South-East Queensland in mid-February to prepare for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

This essential training is specifically designed to ensure Defence is prepared and well position to support the Australian Government’s overall security arrangements for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Residents of the Gold Coast and in vicinity of White Island Fire Training Depot in Brisbane should not be alarmed if they see military vehicles and personnel, or hear the associated noise of blank gunfire and pyrotechnics.

Local police and other authorities are aware of this training.

The training will use shopping centres, various buildings and transport infrastructure specifically chosen for their training value and the added realism that comes from training in these areas. None of these locations is under any form of actual threat.

Defence acknowledges that these activities may result in possible disturbances to local residents, however, wherever possible, the ADF seeks to minimise this disruption.

The ADF thanks local residents and businesses for their continued support and cooperation during this important training.

The ADF is unable to provide media access or further information, including specific timings, regarding this training in order to protect operational tactics, techniques and procedures.
