Military personnel, vehicles, equipment and aircraft from the ADF and its partners will operate across Australia in support of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025.
The Australian Public in Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory, and Western Australia should expect to see an increase presence of heavy military convoys on public roads throughout July and the start of August 2025.
Thousands of Australian and International military vehicles – including tanks, protected mobility vehicles, and logistics convoys – will be travelling between Defence bases, ports, airfields, and exercise locations.
The vehicles are large, heavy and often slower-moving that require additional space and time on the road.
Peak impacts are expected for the following periods:
- Sydney: 3 July to 13 July.
- Adelaide to Darwin (via the Stuart Highway): 1 July to 5 July and 25 July to 30 July
- Perth to RAAF Curtin (via the North-West Coastal Highway): 11 July to 15 July and 25 July to 30 July.
- Darwin and RAAF Base Tindal (via National Highway 1): 13 July to 27 July.
- RAAF Curtin and Derby: 11 July to 30 July.
- Charter Towers: 13 July to 4 August.
- Tully: 13 July to 4 August.
- Shoalwater Bay: 13 July to 4 August.
- Beecroft Range: 21 July to 25 July.
Defence asks that the public to be patient, drive cautiously, and avoid overtaking unless it’s clearly safe to do so. We ask the community to be aware, but not alarmed by these activities.
SAFETY TIPS FOR ROAD USERS:
- Keep a safe distance – especially from tracked vehicles and convoys.
- Do not attempt to overtake long military convoys.
- Be alert for slower speeds, wider turns, and changes in road conditions.
- Follow all traffic management signage and escort vehicle instructions.
The community can expect increased aircraft movement and associated noise in the following locations:
- New South Wales – Sydney, Holsworthy and Liverpool.
- North Queensland – Rockhampton, Townsville, Charters Towers and Tully.
- Northern Territory – Darwin region.
Training exercises help ensure the ADF remain in a ready state of preparedness in the protection of Australia and its national interests. Community support to continue this important training is appreciated.
Defence thanks the public for the continued support and understanding.
Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying. Information on aircraft noise is available at www.defence.gov.au/aircraftnoise or by calling 1300 DEFENCE (1300 333 362).
