The Fourth Industrial Revolution will drive major changes in the character of war.
HUSKY Mark 3
The HUSKY is the most blast-survivable vehicle in Afghanistan. There have been hundreds of strikes against these vehicles, with many of the vehicles being struck more than once and continually demonstrate resistance and survivability.
A unique feature of the HUSKY, in addition to the protection afforded to its crew, is its design. The HUSKY is designed to blow apart if an IED is detonated and can be rebuilt in the field with minimal effort.
It also has an added level of protection with ‘overpass’ tyres that produce a very low ground pressure that aims to reduce the chances of detonating a pressure activated IED.
Ground penetrating radar
HUSKY Mark 3 protected route clearance vehicles fitted with Non-Intrusive Inspection Technology (NIITEK) ground penetrating radar (GPR) are able to detect explosive hazards. The GPR system is capable of detecting metallic and non-metallic objects beneath the surface of the ground.
Project NINGAUI will acquire generation two enhanced GPR panels to boost the probability of detection, lower false alarm rate and reduce susceptibility to Force Protection Electronic Counter Measures.
In addition to affording superior level of personal protection, thorough testing has shown that a competent operator will experience higher probability of detection and a lower false alarm rate than that of a dismounted Sapper using the Handheld Standoff Mine Detection System. The most effective tool in the search for IED’s continues to be a well trained soldier, with good understanding of ground sign awareness, human terrain and atmospherics.
Within the four systems to be acquired under Project NINGAUI, there will be two HUSKY Mark 3 fitted with GPR. This allows for regular operator change-over for long clearances, to cope with operational tempo and redundancy within each system.
Another variant pivotal to Project NINGAUI is the HUSKY Mark 3 fitted with an interrogator arm.
The interrogator arm can be used to detect a possible IED that may have been placed in the vicinity of a route by using cameras and viewing equipment fitted to the boom arm that can extend to a distance of almost 6 metres from the front of the HUSKY. The interrogator arm is capable of digging and uncovering suspected IEDs using the gripper tool and scoop from the safety of the armoured HUSKY.
This system can also be used to look over walls or other terrain close to a route that might obscure vision or be otherwise inaccessible for detection by other mounted vehicles, and would normally require exposed dismounted troops.
A multi-function digging implement fitted to the boom can be used to manipulate the ground or objects around a suspected device that may have been used to disguise or cover the IED from view. The advantage of the interrogator arm is that manipulation of the ground can be done from the safety from a protected position and without requiring troops to dismount and investigate.
