Maps
“All together, Britain printed 34 million war maps, France over 30 million, and Germany a staggering 775 million (including the Eastern Front).”
Peter Chasseaud, ‘British, French and German Mapping and Survey on the Western Front in the First World War’, in Peter Doyle and Matthew R. Bennett (eds.), Fields of Battle: Terrain in Military History, Dordrecht, The Netherlands: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2002, p. 171.
WWI trench maps remain one of the most visually recognisable artefacts of the Great War. They were critical to the planning and conduct of military campaigns, to logistics and infrastructure, and to moving troops in and out of conflict zones. They are also extremely important tools for military historians and battlefield archaeologists to understand both the topography of the terrain and plot the movement of troops in attack and defence. If one cannot understand the landscape, one cannot understand the battle.
The maps below are a portion of the Army History Unit’s collection of trench maps of the Western Front. Not all sections of the front line are represented as they focus on battlefields where the Australian Imperial Force fought. A very small number of the maps are German, but the vast majority are British maps in 1:100,000, 1:40,000, 1:20,000 and 1:10,000 scales. These maps have been made available to assist researchers and historians.
