Supporting Armys Aviation Capability
Over the last two years, the Museum of Australian Army Flying (MAAF) has expanded its training beyond giving tours and lectures to units at the Army Aviation Training Centre, to include trade specific training and work experience.
MAAF has developed a close partnership with the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Aircraft Maintenance School (RAMS). Trainees from the school work within the museum, assisting with the restoration of Army heritage and culture assets, while at the same time building on their own skills. Under the supervision of qualified mechanics they complete certified training on aircraft parts and assemblies. The trainees develop valuable skills, gain competencies and have their workbooks certified by the MAAF workshop manager.
During their time with the museum, trainees are exposed to a number of skills, including precision drilling and riveting, fabrication of aircraft parts and panels, use of various hand tools, surface finishing, and basic welding. The partnership provides the trainees with experiences not available at RAMS, such as fuselage riveting and metal shaping.
Trainees also contribute to the maintenance of Army’s aviation heritage through the restoration, preservation and conservation of the museum’s collection. This includes the manufacture of replica parts for aircraft or the production of storage racks, containers and other equipment for artefacts.
After beginning their journey working on Army’s oldest aircraft, MAAF’s latest trainees have gone on to begin their formal courses and careers as aircraft maintainers of Army’s most modern aircraft.
The trainee program is also important for the museum’s dedicated volunteers who get to share their skills, knowledge and experience with members of the Australian Defence Force.
