Anzac Day 2020
This Anzac Day will be different for all of us. Even though we can't physically stand together, it is still a chance for each of us to reflect with gratitude on the sacrifice of those serving now and of those who have served before us.
To limit the spread of COVID-19, the Government has made the difficult decision to cancel public attendance at regular services following discussions with State and Territory leaders, the RSL, and in relation to Australian-led services overseas, in close partnership with other nations.
These disruptions do not change the purpose of Anzac Day. This special day is a chance for each of us, in our own way, to reflect on what service means. It is an opportunity to pause, to remember and pay respects to all Australians who have served and continue to serve our nation, to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and to acknowledge those who carry the visible and invisible cost of their service.
This year, Army will be supporting a variety of online services and initiatives to encourage the celebration of Anzac Day in a unique way.
The Australian War Memorial will go ahead with a private, nationally televised Anzac Day commemorative service on 25 April 2020. This revised ceremony will be held in the Commemorative Area and Hall of Memory of the Memorial at 5.30 am on Anzac Day.
The event will not be open to the public but will be broadcast live across Australia by the ABC and streamed online. You can access their Facebook Live stream here.
Supporting Australians at this time is our highest priority. If you feel you are in need of additional support, please contact Open Arms — Veterans and Families Counselling. This service provides support for current and ex-serving ADF personnel and their families. Free and confidential help is available 24/7 on 1800 011 046.
If you're not a member of the ADF, you can still access free, confidential counselling resources with Life Line Australia (13 11 14) and Beyond Blue (1300 224 636).
