Warrant Officer Mark Retallick enlisted into the Australian Regular Army in October 1986. After recruit and corps training he spent 10 years with the 1st Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment in Townsville where he progressed to corporal. In 1997, he was posted to the School of Infantry as an Instructor at Depot Company. He was promoted to sergeant in 1998 and was posted back to the 1st Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment.

In 2002, Warrant Officer Retallick completed his time in the Battalion and was posted to Royal Military College Detachment North Queensland as the Operations Sergeant. In 2003, Warrant Officer Retallick was then promoted to Warrant Officer and posted to Headquarters 3rd Brigade as Company Sergeant Major of the Brigade Maintenance Area. Whilst at Headquarters 3rd Brigade Warrant Officer Retallick was posted to the Marine Corps Urban Warfare Training Centre in California as an instructor for six months. In 2006, Warrant Officer Retallick was posted to the Royal Military College Duntroon as the Company Sergeant Major of First Class.

After a very rewarding two years at the Royal Military College Duntroon Warrant Officer Retallick was posted to the 1st Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment as the Company Sergeant Major of Bravo Company. In his second year, he fulfilled the position of Company Sergeant Major of the Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team with Mentoring Reconstruction Taskforce - Two in Afghanistan.

On return from Afghanistan, Warrant Officer Retallick was posted to Combat Training Centre Townsville where he fulfilled the position of an Observer Trainer. He was subsequently promoted to Warrant Officer Class One and posted to 12/40 Royal Tasmanian Regiment in January 2011 as the Regimental Sergeant Major. In 2014 he was posted to The Pilbara Regiment as the Regimental Sergeant Major and in 2015 was appointed as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 8th/9th Battalion the Royal Australian Regiment. In 2018 he assumed the position as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Combat Training Centre and in 2019 was appointed the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 3rd Brigade. He was appointed Command Warrant Officer of Joint Task Force 633 in 2020 for 12 months based in Dubai. He was then appointed as the Regimental Sergeant Major of Training and Doctrine Army in 2022 and on 04 April 2022 was appointed as the Regimental Sergeant Major of 2nd Division.

Warrant Officer Retallick’s honours and awards include; the Order of Australia Medal, Conspicuous Service Medal, Australian Active Service Medal (Somalia, East Timor and Afghanistan clasps), Defence Force Long Service Medal, Australian Defence Medal, Afghanistan Service Medal, United Nations UNTAET Medal, Afghanistan ISAF Medal, Australian Service Medal (Solomon Islands Clasp) and Operational Service Medal Greater Middle East Region OP OKRA Iraq.

Warrant Officer Retallick is married to Carolyn and has two children; Jack and Isabella.
