Command Sergeant Major - Forces Command
Warrant Officer Class One David Allen was born in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1963. He enlisted into the Australian Army in May 1981 and, on completion of recruit training, was assigned to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps.
Warrant Officer Class One Allen has served in a number of Australian Army units, including: 5th/7th Battalion and 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment; 5th/6th Battalion, The Royal Victoria Regiment; and 4th/3rd Battalion, The Royal New South Wales Regiment. He has held the positions of section commander, platoon sergeant, company mechanised sergeant, training warrant officer, and company sergeant major.
His instructional assignments include: Platoon Sergeant for Infantry Initial Employment Training at the School of Infantry; Senior Instructor at the Land Warfare Detachment in Victoria; and the Training and Development Warrant Officer at the Royal Military College at Duntroon. He served on exchange at the United States Infantry School in Fort Benning, Georgia, from October 1997 to December 1999 as a Tactics Team Sergeant Major, where he was awarded the United States Army Meritorious Service Medal.
Warrant Officer Class One Allen has held regimental appointments as the Regimental Sergeant Major of 5th/6th Battalion, The Royal Victoria Regiment; 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment; Wing Sergeant Major for Rifleman Wing, Regimental Sergeant Major of the Combat Training Centre and Regimental Sergeant Major of 1st Brigade. His operational service includes Operation CITADEL in Timor-Leste (East Timor) in 2003 and Operation SLIPPER in 2008–09.
Warrant Officer Class One Allen was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queens Birthday Honours List in 2013 for meritorious service as the Regimental Sergeant Major of 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment; Regimental Sergeant Major of Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force One; and Regimental Sergeant Major of the Combat Training Centre.
Warrant Officer Class One Allen holds a Bachelor of Training and Management Development from the University of New England.
