Warrant Officer Class One Leanne Iseppi OAM
Warrant Officer Leanne Iseppi was recently deployed to Greece as part of a contingent of Australia’s Federation Guard commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Greece and Crete.
Leanne grew up in Waroona, Western Australia, where she attended Pinjarra High School and played hockey and basketball for her hometown. She was also a member of the Girl Guides and went on to be a Scout leader.
She joined the Army in 1986 after finishing high school and said that it was one of the best decisions she ever made.
“One day I simply decided to walk into recruiting, signed the application and within four weeks I was on a bus to recruit school,” Leanne said.
“The Army has been the best thing that I could have done and I’ve been lucky to have amazing opportunities.”
Starting her career as a driver within signals corps, 25 years later Leanne has climbed the ranks to Regimental Sergeant Major – Ceremonial of the Defence Force where she is responsible for overseeing ceremonial protocol.
“I like the experience I get at the Government level working with the Chief and Vice-Chief of the Defence Force,” Leanne said.
“I’m given a lot of trust in managing all tri-service ceremonial aspects of the Defence Force.”
Leanne says she gained a lot both professionally and personally out of the trip to Greece.
“I’ve enjoyed the role immensely – coordinating the ceremonial aspects of the parades and especially the interaction with the veterans,” Leanne said.
“The personnel from Australia’s Federation Guard performed exceptionally and have met all my expectations of them.”
“They showed a lot of empathy and compassion in performing their duties.”
Leanne said that although it is a key part of Australian history, most Australian’s don’t have much knowledge of the Greek campaign in comparison to that of Turkey and the beaches of Gallipoli.
“I know I will have a better understanding of the history and look forward to passing on the information and raising the profile of the campaign,” Leanne said.
Australia's Federation Guard is an Australian Defence Force unit, comprised of members from the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force, that provides ceremonial support for the Australian Commonwealth.
