7th Combat Signal Regiment

7th Combat Signal Regiment
The 7th Combat Signal Regiment (7 CSR) provides communications and unit-level combat service support to Headquarters 7th Brigade in order to enable command and control of forces assigned to Commander 7th Brigade.

The 7th Combat Signal Regiment (7 CSR) provides communications and unit-level combat service support to Headquarters 7th Brigade (7 Bde) in order to enable command and control (C2) of forces assigned to Commander 7th Brigade (Comd 7 Bde). 7 CSR is based at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera in Brisbane, Queensland.

Structurally, 7 CSR comprises three squadrons: two Signal Squadrons (139 and 140 Signal Squadrons) and a support squadron (HQ Squadron), in addition to the Regimental Headquarters. Currently, 140 Signal Squadron is an Army Reserve squadron, however, in December 2012, this Reserve element will move from 7 Bde to 11 Bde and become part of 141 Signal Squadron. In January 2013, 140 Signal Squadron will become fully established as the second ARA squadron of 7 CSR.

The Regiment enables Comd 7 Bde’s C2 through the provision of strategic communications services and HQ support. In the field environment, C2 is facilitated through the use of wide band satellite, unclassified phone services through the Public Switched Telephone Network connected to the Defence Voice Network, Video Teleconferencing and Deployable Defence Restricted and Secret Networks. Furthermore, 7 CSR provides Comd 7 BDE with a quickly deployable narrow band service, allowing for access to strategic services on a smaller scale when manoeuvring around the battlefield.

The Regiment also facilitates C2 at the Battle Group level by providing mobile radio detachments. These detachments give Comd 7 Bde the ability to interact with his subordinate units, using Line Of Sight and Beyond Line Of Sight digital radio bearers to provide voice and Battlefield Management System communications. 7 CSR is responsible for communication security advice and frequency management for 7th Brigade units.

The Regiment has been continually participating in operations for the past five years and members of 7 CSR have served on active duty as part of Mentoring Task Forces in Afghanistan, the Security Detachment in Iraq, the Force Communications Unit in the Middle East Area of Operations, and the Force Communications Element in East Timor. In addition to operational commitments, 7 CSR also provides a communications element to the 7 Bde Defence Aid to the Civil Community force that is on reduced Notice To Move in the event of an emergency requiring Defence support; such as flood or cyclone assistance operations.
