Reservists play key role in Exercise Hamel
Full-time stay at home mum and Army Reservist, Private Andrena Berran, is one of more than 9000 personnel on Exercise Hamel.

Private Berran is an operator supplier with the 4th/19th Prince of Wales, Lighthorse, based in Bandiana, Victoria.

Maintaining a security presence is an important part of any exercise. Private Berran’s unit is part of the Force Protection Group (FPG) for Exercise Hamel and one of their roles is to provide a physical security presence for the Rockhampton transit base. This includes the prevention, detection and detention of trespassers, with co-ordination and support from the Military Police and Queensland Police Service.

Private Berran is an FPG supplier controlling stores and is one of a small group also able to assist with conducting a female search if required.

“There are five trained women working in Rockhampton and in the Shoalwater Bay Training Area. We’ve had two days of Defence tactic training to learn how to detain with minimal force,” Private Berran said.

Her supervisor on Exercise Hamel, Warrant Officer Class Two, Robert Butchart, has been impressed with the way that Private Berran has conducted her duties. Warrant Officer Butchart described her role as “part-time service with full-time capability”.
