In 2010 Unrecovered War Casualties – Army assisted the Papua New Guinea Defence Force in identifying three Papua New Guinea Soldiers who were killed in Bougainville during the unrest in 1997.
Unrecovered War Casualties – Army deployed a forensic team to Bougainville and with assistance from members of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) and officials from Autonomous Bougainville Government, collected personal details of each soldier and carried out three post-mortem examinations.
At the end of the investigation Unrecovered War Casualties – Army was able to confirm the identity of the three PNGDF soldiers.
The PNGDF reached an agreement with the Autonomous Bougainville Government to repatriate the remains of the soldiers to their respective homelands.
The soldier’s remains are currently waiting for repatriation and burial by their families.
